On March 8th, people across the globe celebrate the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women everywhere.

To mark International Women’s Day in 2020, the IWD community has outlined 3 very simple objectives:

  • Celebrate women's achievements.
  • Raise awareness against bias.
  • Take action for equality.

What makes International Women’s Day so successful is that it’s proudly powered by the collective efforts of women everywhere, and has been since 1911.

Challenging stereotypes, fighting bias, broadening perceptions, improving working situations and celebrating women's achievements sits at the very heart of International Women’s Day.

International Women’s Day is the perfect opportunity to make a truly positive difference for women around the world.

Join us in celebrating the valuable contributions and outstanding achievements of the incredible working women in our lives.

Historic Wins For Women in the Workplace

When it comes to the world of work, women have come a very long way in a short space of time.

Both the first and second world wars provided women with new opportunities in the workplace.

As men left to go and fight the war efforts abroad, women were needed to take their place in factories and on farms. Women were already an important part of the workforce before the wars, but they were mainly limited to roles such as clerks or assistants.

While the long-lasting impacts of the wars on women’s employment have been hard to measure in full, there’s no doubt that the circumstances were a catalyst that gave women an opportunity to prove they were just as capable as men.

Since then, women have continued to smash the barriers that have stood in the way of equality in the workplace. Anti-discrimination laws and parliamentary legislation, such as the Equal Pay Act in 1970, have shown that with grit and determination society is able to move in the right direction.

But, while progress has been made there’s still plenty of work to be done.

Raising Awareness Against Bias

The UN has called gender inequality “the unfinished business of our time”. Unfortunately there’s still a long way to go to achieve gender equality worldwide.

For too many women across the globe, gender bias is a daily part of their professional lives. Our jobs provide us with the economic means to support ourselves and our families, and they’re also a huge part of our health, wellbeing, and satisfaction in life. Everyone has a right to feel secure and valued in their place of work.

But, it can be difficult to understand the effects that stereotypes and unconscious bias can have until you've directly experienced them for yourself.

As many as 42% of women claim that they have experienced workplace discrimination first hand, with that statistic only accounting for the women who have reported it.

A key to changing workplace culture is to become more sensitive towards bias. For professional work environments to become more self-aware, employees need to actively make sure that there’s no room for harmful biases and gender bias is called out if and when it does happen.

The results will be a happier and more productive workplace for all employees.
